The architect’s house, the home the architect builds for himself, is a tool more powerful than one would imagine at first. As being the client, as well as the designer, the architect has hardly any constraints during the design and construction process, besides his own wishes. He can use his own house for instance as a unique opportunity for a technological or architectural experiment and cultivate his sense of “entrepreneurial daring” to the fullest. The house can also become a manifest, a pilot project, a masterpiece or turning point in the architect his career. Thereby it represents the best possible business card within the profession.

During the research project, each architect's house was extensively documented in the database, for instance with biographical data on the architect (and his network), monographical aspects, bibliographical references and lists of publications on the respective architect's house, but also with cadastral and historical information, detailed information on the architectural studio and an overview on the alterations to and intactness of the house. Moreover, for about half of the registered architects' houses, additional information and documentation was gathered, archival documents were scrutinized, photographic documentaries were made, the complete oeuvre was mapped, etc.
When you are working on, or are interested in, a specific architect's house, you can request detailed access to the complete records of the concerned architect's house through the form below.
